China Rejects Japan 2026 Defense White Paper Claims

China's Foreign Ministry rejected Japan's 2026 Defense White Paper, denying that it poses a strategic threat and criticizing Japan's military expansion.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to Japan's 2026 Defense White Paper on Wednesday. The Chinese government rejected the report's characterization of China as Japan's greatest strategic challenge, calling the associated threat narrative groundless.

Spokesperson Lin Jian accused Japan of accelerating remilitarization and developing long-range offensive capabilities in violation of its own Constitution and international law. Lin further criticized Japan for failing to repent for historical crimes committed by Japanese militarists.

China also condemned Japan for interfering in internal affairs concerning the Taiwan region and the Diaoyu Dao islands. In response to the document, which frames defense investment as a driver for Japanese economy and society, China has lodged serious representations with the Japanese government.
