Trump Pushes Dulles Airport Overhaul and Renaming Effort

President Donald Trump is personally overseeing an initiative to overhaul Washington Dulles International Airport after criticizing its design, stating the facility has a great building but is not a good airport. In a series of meetings at the White House with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and firms such as AECOM, the administration reviewed proposals to remake terminals, redo runways, and remove airport shuttles. The administration is seeking rapid improvements through public-private partnerships, viewing the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority's existing 15-year, $7 billion master plan as too slow.

Parallel to the renovation, the White House attempted to leverage funding for the $16 billion Gateway Tunnel project to secure the renaming of Dulles Airport and New York Penn Station after the president. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rejected the offer, citing a lack of authority.

The proposal to rename the airport has met with political resistance. Virginia Representative Suhas Subramanyam stated he would fight the effort to create a Trump Airport, though he expressed support for using federal resources to improve the facility for travelers. This push is part of a broader trend of the president affixing his name to government properties and federal programs since returning to office in 2025.
