India Extends $500 Million Credit Line to Guyana at CHOGM
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced a $500 million credit extension for Guyana and advocated for digital public infrastructure during the Commonwealth meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced a $500 million Line of Credit extension for Guyana during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The funding targets public and defense infrastructure, specifically roads and health projects. The agreement includes grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects and the implementation of a UPI-like payment system in Guyana, building on a 2024 state visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the Commonwealth Heads of Government Executive Session on November 4, Jaishankar advocated for the use of digital public infrastructure to promote financial responsibility and good governance. He stated that such systems have helped "democratise our economies by expanding opportunities" and suggested the Indian model is an instructive example for other member nations.
On the sidelines of the summit, Jaishankar met with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali to sign the infrastructure and digital cooperation agreements. He also held discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham to discuss economic partnerships and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Jaishankar noted that India's current trade negotiations and agreements are designed to ensure predictable trade and resilient supply chains.
