Where they stand

S. Jaishankar is finishing a six-nation diplomatic tour that took him from Gulf capitals to the United Nations to Brussels in ten days. In New York on July 13 he launched India's campaign for a non-permanent UN Security Council seat for 2028-29, unveiling the SHANTI vision — rules-based order, Global South interests, counter-terror financing, maritime security under UNCLOS, and ethical AI via the MANAV framework. Slovakia's FM Blanar endorsed the bid the next day. India competes against OIC-endorsed Tajikistan for the Asia-Pacific seat in June 2027.

In Brussels on July 14-15 he co-chaired the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, meeting European Council President Costa and EC VP Kallas. The agenda covered the finalized India-EU FTA, Indo-Pacific maritime security, and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, with Kallas pressing for deeper Indian Navy cooperation with EU operations ATALANTA and ASPIDES.

In New York the same day, Jaishankar announced fresh humanitarian aid to Palestine, reaffirmed India's financial support for UNRWA — which recognizes India as its top emerging donor — and backed Palestine's full UN membership bid at a Brussels donor meeting.

Poland resolved its differences with India over discounted Russian oil during Deputy FM Bartoszewski's New Delhi visit (July 13-15). Jaishankar defended India's energy ties with Moscow as guided by national interests; Bartoszewski praised Modi as one of the few leaders who can influence Putin, and a PM Tusk visit is planned.

The tour's Gulf leg (July 5-10) covered Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, focused on Strait of Hormuz security, energy supply stability, and post-conflict regional ties. In Doha he addressed the Ras Laffan gas explosion that killed 12 Indians; in Manama, Bahraini leaders thanked India for solidarity after Iranian missile attacks.
