Thousands of Overseas Israelis Return to Vote in October Election

More than 50,000 Israeli citizens living abroad are traveling to Israel to vote in the October 27 election following a legal dispute over travel assistance.

More than 50,000 Israeli citizens living abroad are expected to travel to Israel to cast ballots in the October 27 election. The vote serves as a referendum on Benjamin Netanyahu and his hard-right government after nearly three years of conflict in Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon. A survey by the Fly & Vote initiative indicates that 84% of overseas Israelis view the election as critical, with many citing concerns over judicial overhauls and the future of Israeli democracy.

Because Israel requires physical presence at polling stations, the US-based NGO Aid Coalition launched the Fly & Vote initiative to help citizens arrange travel. The program faced a legal challenge from the Likud party, which accused the NGO of electoral bribery. A settlement reached last week requires the Aid Coalition to stop selling new flights, though previously purchased tickets remain valid.

The surge in returning voters has sparked a debate over voting laws. Some advocates argue the system is outdated and should allow remote or mail-in voting, while others oppose granting blanket voting rights to those who have permanently relocated. Political commentators suggest the returning population is predominantly liberal, which could influence the balance of power in the Knesset.
