Corporate Bond Yield Gap Signals S&P 500 Volatility

Goldman Sachs warns that a widening yield gap between junk bond ratings historically precedes significant stock market drawdowns.

The corporate bond market is signaling potential volatility for the S&P 500 as the yield gap between Triple-C and Single-B rated junk bonds has exceeded 9%. This gap first crossed the 8% threshold on September 24, a level that has historically preceded significant stock market declines.

Goldman Sachs flagged this correlation in a client note, noting that similar gaps occurred in 1999, 2000, 2008, 2015, and 2020. In 2000 and 2015, the S&P 500 fell 17% and 14% respectively after the yield difference hit the 8% mark. Triple-C ratings indicate a substantial risk of default, while Single-B ratings indicate vulnerability.

Currently, the S&P 500 sits approximately 3.5% below its peak highs as investors monitor these debt class signals for further market drawdowns.
