US Seeks Cheaper Drone After Losing 30 Reaper Aircraft

The United States is developing a cheaper successor to the MQ-9 Reaper after losing approximately 30 drones to Iranian air defenses.

The United States Department of Defense is seeking a more affordable replacement for the MQ-9 Reaper drone after losing approximately 30 aircraft to Iranian air defenses and counterstrikes. These losses represent roughly $1 billion in equipment, reducing the Air Force's Reaper fleet to about 135 aircraft. Because General Atomics ceased Reaper production in 2025, the Defense Innovation Unit is now sourcing a cheaper successor capable of carrying 2,800 pounds of payload with a combat radius of at least 2,300 nautical miles, targeting a 2031 deployment.

These developments follow a surge in hostilities after Iranian strikes on commercial shipping led President Donald Trump to signal the end of a fragile ceasefire. The breakdown in diplomacy triggered further U.S. airstrikes in the region.

Despite the attrition, military officials characterized the Reaper as the most valuable player in the conflict, asserting that no other platform is comparable in strike capability. Other recent military losses in the region include three U.S. F-15 jets shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses and a midair collision between two KC-135 refueling aircraft in Iraq.
