Bitcoin Surges as Trump Meets Crypto Leaders and Treasury Expands Buybacks
Bitcoin prices climbed toward $70,000 following a U.S. Treasury bond buyback expansion and a White House summit between President Donald Trump and cryptocurrency executives.
Bitcoin prices surged toward $70,000 on August 19, 2026, driven by a combination of monetary policy shifts and high-level political engagement. The U.S. Department of the Treasury triggered the initial rally by announcing it would double the size of certain long-term bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation. This move weakened the U.S. dollar and lowered 30-year Treasury yields, pushing Bitcoin from an intraday low of $64,100 to a peak of $69,700.
The price spike caused a massive short squeeze, liquidating approximately $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency derivatives positions within one hour. Other major assets, including Ethereum, XRP, and Solana, also recorded gains.
Simultaneously, President Donald Trump hosted executives from Coinbase Global, Payward, and Blockchain.com at the White House. The meeting included SEC Chair Paul Atkins and CFTC Chair Mike Selig, as well as White House crypto advisor Patrick Witt. These discussions occur as the Senate remains in a legislative stalemate over the Clarity Act, which seeks to establish a legal framework for the market. While the act is stalled, the executive branch has moved forward with independent actions, including a recent SEC rule change favorable to the industry.
