Donald Trump Falsely Claims TikTok Popularity Over Taylor Swift
President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed to be the most followed person on TikTok, despite data showing he has significantly fewer followers than Taylor Swift and Khaby Lame.
President Donald Trump repeatedly and falsely claimed in early July 2026 that he is the most followed person on TikTok. During an Oval Office meeting with reporters on June 6 and a later White House press conference for his Trump Accounts programme, Trump asserted he was "number one by a lot," specifically ranking singer Taylor Swift at number 11. He suggested his presence on the platform helped him win the election in a landslide.
Trump continued these claims on July 8 during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara, Türkiye. He alleged that his videos are the platform's most popular content and have been viewed by approximately half of the global population. During this summit, Trump also made several verbal errors, including referring to the "Islamic Republic of Japan" and calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "President Putin."
Public data contradicts these assertions. While Trump has approximately 16.7 million followers, Taylor Swift has 33.5 million. Neither appears in the platform's top 10, which is led by influencer Khaby Lame with 162.3 million followers. A graphic Trump shared on Truth Social, attributed to TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, identified him as the top world leader on the platform, rather than the top user overall. Meanwhile, White House social media accounts spent a weekend mocking Swift's marriage to Travis Kelce through parody posts and Eras Tour-inspired graphics.
