U.S. Stocks Edge Higher Amid AI Gains and Geopolitical Tension

U.S. stock indexes ended slightly higher on October 1 as AI gains and cooling Treasury yields offset rising oil prices and Middle East tensions.

U.S. stock indexes ended a volatile session slightly higher on October 1, 2026, as gains in artificial intelligence stocks offset macroeconomic headwinds. The S&P 500 rose 0.19% to 7,666.45, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite both edged up 0.04%.

Micron Technology and Alphabet Inc. drove early gains, with Micron reporting quadrupled quarterly revenue and Alphabet introducing a new Gemini model. These tech gains occurred despite the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield hitting an intraday high of 5.342%, the highest level since 2002. Yields later retreated to 5.233% as expectations for an October interest-rate hike diminished following comments from Federal Reserve Governor Philip Jefferson and New York Fed President John Williams, who suggested the central bank may wait until December to adjust policy.

Market volatility was further influenced by rising energy costs. Brent crude climbed 4.4% to $102.31 after the Pentagon deployed a third aircraft-carrier strike group and additional troops to the Middle East. The military buildup follows indications that President Donald Trump is considering renewed strikes on Iran.
