US Redesignates Hezbollah as Iranian Proxy and Sanctions Network

The United States redesignated Hezbollah as an Iranian proxy and sanctioned a cash-smuggling network moving hundreds of millions of dollars to evade financial systems.

The United States government redesignated Hezbollah as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist on August 20, 2026, formally identifying the group as an Iranian proxy under the command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force. This legal shift recognizes Hezbollah's military and financing networks as extensions of Iran rather than a stand-alone Lebanese resistance movement.

Simultaneously, the United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned 10 individuals, including a Turkish businessman, for operating a cash-smuggling network. The network used exchange houses and couriers on commercial flights between Lebanon, Turkiye, the UAE, and Iran to move hundreds of millions of dollars outside the formal financial system to evade sanctions.

These actions are part of a broader economic pressure campaign by the Trump administration to force the Iranian regime into an agreement to end the war. While Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated these specific actions were separate from planned measures, he indicated that the toughest sanctions in history against Iran would be announced on Monday.
