Republican Candidates Distance Themselves From Donald Trump Ahead of Midterms

Republican candidates for the 2026 midterm elections are increasingly distancing themselves from Donald Trump as his approval ratings hit historic lows. A recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll shows the president's approval rating has fallen to 39%, with 53% of voters expressing strong disapproval. This shift has led GOP officials in competitive races to break from the administration on key issues, including the war with Iran, immigration enforcement, and tariffs.

Several candidates in swing states like Michigan, Iowa, and Wisconsin are openly criticizing signature policies to attract swing voters. Republican Senate nominees Mike Rogers and Ashley Hinson have called for an immediate end to the war in Iran to lower gas and grocery prices. In Florida, Representative María Elvira Salazar released an advertisement stating that the president's immigration enforcement efforts have "gone too far."

Other candidates have taken strategic steps to reduce their association with the president. Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds scrubbed prominent Trump references from his campaign website, while Tom Tiffany distanced himself from the president's trade policies and the renaming of Lake Ontario. Simultaneously, Senator John Curtis of Utah urged an investigation into Donald Trump Jr. regarding financing from a Russian oligarch.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle has defended the president as the party's "unequivocal leader," while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries characterized the GOP's internal friction as "full panic mode" resulting from the president's collapsing popularity.
