APC Launches Anambra Reconciliation as Niger State Members Threaten Defection

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing simultaneous internal crises in two Nigerian states as it prepares for the 2027 elections. In Anambra State, the party's National Working Committee inaugurated a five-member reconciliation committee to address a leadership rift. This dispute followed allegations of nomination manipulation and the expulsion of seven members. Deputy National Chairman (South) Benjamin Nwoye stated that the panel will engage stakeholders in Abuja and Awka to identify the causes of the rift and restore unity. The party is also coordinating with security agencies in Anambra to protect assets.

Meanwhile, the party faces a different challenge in Niger State, where a coalition of former commissioners, lawmakers, and grassroots leaders are threatening a mass defection. These members accuse Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of hijacking the party structure and imposing preferred candidates. Ibrahim Idris, a former aide to ex-Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, warned that the party is disintegrating due to the interests of a microscopic few. Idris urged President Bola Tinubu and National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda to intervene to prevent the total collapse of the state chapter. The dissident group is currently awaiting the official candidate list before deciding on their final move.
