Russian Strikes Kill Civilians in Sumy and Balakliia

The Military of Russia conducted a series of aerial assaults across Ukraine on September 18 and 19, 2026, utilizing missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs. In Sumy, a guided bomb struck a nine-story apartment block in the Kovpakivskyi district, killing two municipal workers and injuring eight people, including two children. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as an "absolutely inhuman strike," noting that rescue crews recovered four people from the rubble, including a child.

In the Kharkiv region, Russian forces targeted 15 settlements. In the town of Balakliia, initial reports on September 18 indicated two deaths and two injuries following a strike that damaged residential properties. However, updated reports on September 19 revealed a drone strike had leveled a private home, killing four civilians and prompting a local day of mourning. Across the broader Kharkiv region, five people were killed and 15 injured over a 24-hour period.

Additional strikes targeted a clinic in Pavlohrad and a logistics center outside Kyiv. Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported a missile attack on Kyiv on the evening of September 18, though no casualties or damage were confirmed. Russia has previously stated its intent to establish a buffer zone in the border region where Sumy is located.
