US Imposes Historic Sanctions and Blockade on Iran
The United States has launched a naval blockade and historic economic sanctions against Iran, driving Brent crude prices toward $94 a barrel.
Brent crude prices are trending toward a second consecutive weekly gain, trading near $94 a barrel, as the United States intensifies economic pressure on Iran. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the imposition of the toughest sanctions in history to isolate the Iranian economy, a strategy President Donald Trump described as an "economic D-day."
These measures follow the expiration of a peace deal and the implementation of a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. Abdolnaser Hemmati, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, stated that these actions have virtually stopped crude exports. While supply disruptions persist in the Strait of Hormuz due to vessel attacks and ongoing conflict, Scott Bessent maintains that the U.S. controls the waterway.
Global energy markets face additional pressure from Ukrainian military strikes on Russian refineries and terminals in Tatarstan and Krasnodar. These attacks have tightened the global diesel market, pushing U.S. retail diesel prices to nearly $5.55 a gallon. The Government of China, the largest importer of Iranian oil, has called for a diplomatic resolution, arguing that the sanctions will not be effective.
