U.S. Military Personnel Seek Early Discharge Over Iran War

U.S. military service members are requesting early separation and conscientious objector status citing moral objections to the war in Iran and Trump administration policies.

U.S. military service members are increasingly seeking early separation and conscientious objector status, driven by moral objections to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran and the leadership of the Trump administration. According to the Center on Conscience and War, a surge in calls to the GI Rights Hotline indicates widespread demoralization. Many service members specifically cite the bombing of a girls' school in Iran, which killed 165 civilians, as a primary motivator for their departure.

Beyond the conflict in Iran, personnel have cited the deployment of the National Guard to domestic cities and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's removal of diversity programs as contributing factors to the unrest. Military personnel and counselors describe a crumbling retention rate and a "brain drain," particularly within the Army.

The Pentagon and the White House have denied that a retention crisis exists. Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson stated that all service branches are meeting their recruitment and retention targets for Fiscal Year 2026.
