Secretary Pete Hegseth Purges 80 Senior Military Officers

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired or blocked promotions for 80 generals and admirals to remove a perceived left-wing agenda from the Pentagon.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has launched a series of purges and restrictions within the Pentagon to eliminate what he describes as a "divisive, left-wing agenda" and restore a "warrior ethos." Hegseth has fired or blocked the promotions of up to 80 generals and admirals and implemented widespread polygraph testing to identify leakers.

As part of this effort to dismantle a "protected class" of officers, Hegseth restricted military officers from attending graduate programs at universities including Harvard and Yale. These internal upheavals coincide with an extended war with Iran that has strained military morale and resulted in shortfalls of critical missile interceptors.

Critics and former military leaders warn that these loyalty tests create a climate of mistrust that distracts from wartime priorities. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Q. Brown Jr., who was fired by Hegseth, criticized the use of officers as pawns in culture wars. Meanwhile, General Dan Caine, the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has narrowed his role to focus on mission execution as the primary military adviser rather than engaging in internal policy debates.
