South Korea Backs Trump Outreach to North Korea

The Government of South Korea expressed support for efforts by Donald Trump to resume diplomatic outreach with North Korea. While backing the initiative, Seoul emphasized that any dialogue must result in substantive progress regarding the North Korean nuclear weapons program.

Official Wi Sung-lac stated that the resumption of talks should occur alongside efforts to establish a peace regime on the Korean peninsula. He noted that policy coordination and communication between South Korea and the United States are now more critical than ever to ensure Seoul is not sidelined in Washington's diplomatic efforts.

South Korea further stressed the necessity of maintaining joint defense readiness while pursuing these diplomatic channels. The government maintains that coordination with the United States is essential to ensure that any renewed dialogue leads to concrete results on nuclear issues.
