PJM Capacity Auction Hits Record Highs Amid AI Boom

PJM Interconnection reported record-high capacity prices driven by AI data center demand, prompting bipartisan calls for leadership changes and projected rate hikes for 67 million customers.

The PJM Interconnection, the largest power grid operator in the United States, closed its latest capacity auction at a record $329.17 per megawatt-day, a 22% increase over the previous year. This surge is expected to raise electricity bills by 1.5% to 5% for approximately 67 million customers across 13 states and Washington, D.C., starting in June 2026. The total cost of the auction rose to $16.1 billion, driven primarily by skyrocketing energy demand from AI-focused data centers and the retirement of fossil fuel plants.

While the price hit a regulatory cap negotiated by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to prevent further spikes, the results have sparked a political crisis. A bipartisan group of nine governors, including Phil Murphy of New Jersey and Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, sent a letter to PJM demanding new leadership and a role in appointing board members to address a "crisis of confidence." Democratic officials blame PJM's mismanagement and slow integration of renewables, while Republicans attribute the costs to clean energy mandates that undermine grid stability.

Industry experts and watchdogs, including Monitoring Analytics, warn that the grid has no spare capacity for new data center loads, suggesting developers must now build their own power plants. This strain is compounded by federal spending cuts on renewable energy and extreme weather events, leading to warnings of potential brownouts and long-term rate increases across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions.
