Tinubu Urges Senate to Replace 2015 Criminal Justice Act
President Bola Tinubu transmitted a bill to the Nigerian Senate to repeal the 2015 Administration of Criminal Justice Act and replace it with a 2026 version.
President Bola Tinubu transmitted a bill to the Nigerian Senate on July 9, 2026, requesting the repeal of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and its replacement with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2026. The proposed legislation seeks to overhaul the criminal justice system within the Federal Capital Territory and other federal courts by addressing trial delays, inefficient case management, and the inadequate use of technology in proceedings.
A central feature of the bill is the establishment of an Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Council to oversee law implementation and resolve institutional gaps, such as poor coordination between agencies and delayed investigations. Tinubu stated the reform is intended to ensure the speedy dispensation of justice while protecting society from crime and safeguarding the rights of suspects, defendants, and victims.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio presented the president's request during a plenary session. While one report suggested a referral to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters with a one-week deadline, other reports confirm Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for a report due within four weeks.
