Marco Rubio Pledges U.S. Support for Greek Energy Corridors

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged support for Greek energy infrastructure to reduce global dependence on single-region energy supplies and enhance national security.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that global dependence on energy supplies from a single region threatens the global economy and compromises national security. During a joint press conference in Athens, Rubio identified Iran and the security of the Strait of Hormuz as primary vulnerabilities that could lead to geopolitical disruptions.

To mitigate these risks, the United States is supporting Greece's development of energy infrastructure, including the Vertical Corridor. This project aims to expand American liquefied natural gas exports into Central and Eastern Europe. Rubio reaffirmed U.S. support for Greek energy projects involving companies such as ExxonMobil and Chevron, though he noted that some initiatives involve sensitive diplomatic complications.

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis highlighted that Greece currently transports over 20 percent of global LNG. Gerapetritis expressed a readiness to consider providing maritime assistance in the Strait of Hormuz, provided a viable peace process is in place.
