Pakistan Launches Search for Missing K2 Airways Cargo Plane
Pakistan has deployed naval and air assets to search the Arabian Sea after a K2 Airways cargo aircraft disappeared on Tuesday evening.
A K2 Airways Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft disappeared from radar over the Arabian Sea on Tuesday evening while traveling from Sharjah, UAE, to Karachi. The flight reported a navigational system issue at 21:18 PST, and air traffic controllers observed the plane rapidly descending and changing heading three minutes later. Contact was lost approximately 287 kilometers west of Karachi.
Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, ordered a massive search operation involving the Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, and Civil Aviation Authority. The operation includes the deployment of the warships PNS Zulfiqar and PNS Hunain, a Saab surveillance aircraft, a Navy ATR aircraft from Turbat, and commercial vessels from the National Shipping Corporation.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed solidarity with the families of the five crew members missing in the crash. The Pakistan Airports Authority coordinated the Karachi Area Control Center to track the aircraft's final radar movements as search efforts continue in the Arabian Sea.
