Donald Trump Renames Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 27 renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The changes became visible on digital mapping services starting September 1.

The decision to rename Lake Ontario followed a public dispute between the president and Ontario Premier Doug Ford regarding United States tariffs imposed on Canada. The move has drawn criticism from citizens who describe the renamings as vanity projects that distract from national issues such as healthcare, the economy, and democratic stability.

Even longtime supporters have questioned the directive. Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized the move, stating that the renaming "doesn't make any sense" and characterized the executive order as a tactic to distract the public from an unwinnable war in Iran.
