Xi Jinping Visits North Korea to Reinforce Strategic Alliance

President Xi Jinping conducted a two-day state visit to Pyongyang to strengthen ties with Kim Jong Un and counterbalance growing North Korean military cooperation with Russia.

Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted a two-day state visit to Pyongyang from June 8 to 9, 2026, marking his first trip to North Korea in seven years. The summit, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, focused on deepening strategic, military, and economic cooperation. Xi proposed four goals to consolidate political trust, expand practical cooperation in trade and healthcare, strengthen people-to-people bonds, and enrich strategic coordination for regional peace.

Ahead of the visit, North Korea signaled a hardening stance on its nuclear program. Leader Kim Jong Un inspected a new uranium enrichment facility and ordered a 2.5-fold increase in missile production capacity. Kim Yo Jong, a senior official and sister of the leader, dismissed U.S. demands for denuclearization as an anachronistic dream and declared the country's nuclear status irreversible.

Notably, official readouts from both nations omitted any mention of denuclearization, a departure from Xi's 2019 visit. This shift suggests a tacit Chinese acceptance of North Korea as a nuclear-armed state to maintain regional stability and counter the growing influence of Russia, which has provided North Korea with economic assistance in exchange for troops and munitions for the war in Ukraine. In return, Kim Jong Un reaffirmed North Korea's unwavering support for the one-China principle regarding Taiwan. The visit concluded with a grand farewell ceremony at Pyongyang's international airport on June 9.
