Andy Burnham Faces Backlash Over Manchester City Support
Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces criticism after expressing concern that Manchester City owners might be forced to sell following serious financial rule breaches.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing political backlash after stating he would be "really concerned" if the owners of Manchester City Football Club were forced to sell. The comments follow a finding by an independent commission that the club committed serious Premier League financial rule breaches, including the use of "sham contracts" to hide more than £830 million in secret funding.
The Premier League alleged that the club systematically violated rules for nearly a decade. In response, the Conservative Party accused Burnham of being "completely out of touch" and questioned whether political pressure is being applied to the independent investigation. Downing Street countered that the Prime Minister believes no one is above the rules and that the process must run its course.
Manchester City has denied all wrongdoing and has until Friday to appeal the decision. The club stated it was "both disappointed and surprised" by the commission's opinion. Simultaneously, the Independent Football Regulator announced it will use its powers to assess the suitability of the club's owners based on the commission's findings.
