Jared Kushner Negotiates Nord Stream Investment to End Ukraine War
US Special Envoy Jared Kushner held talks with Russian officials to broker energy investments as a means to restore peace between Russia and Ukraine.
US Special Envoy Jared Kushner and Russian adviser Kirill Dmitriev held talks in Moscow and New York to discuss the entry of US investors into the Nord Stream pipelines. Kushner proposed using "prosperity agreements" as a diplomatic tool to restore peace between Russia and Ukraine.
These discussions include the potential sale of Lukoil assets to a consortium featuring the US International Development Finance Corporation and investors from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. However, the proposal faces significant hurdles because Nord Stream remains under US and EU sanctions. The German government has stated it does not want the pipelines to reopen, though the Alternative for Germany party supports the move. Poland and the Baltic states remain firmly opposed.
White House officials indicated that any potential deals must be negotiated with the Treasury and the DFC to ensure benefits for US taxpayers. Despite these talks, one official described a medium-term deal as unlikely.
