Lula and Bolsonaro Statistically Tied Ahead of Brazil Election

Recent polling indicates a dead heat between Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro ahead of Brazil's first-round presidential election on October 4. A BTG Pactual/Nexus poll released September 21 shows Lula leading in a simulated runoff with 46% against Bolsonaro's 45%, while a Quaest poll shows Bolsonaro leading 42% to 41%. Both results fall within the margin of error.

In a first-round scenario, the BTG Pactual/Nexus survey places Lula at 40% and Bolsonaro at 37%, followed by Augusto Cury at 6%, Ronaldo Caiado at 5%, and Renan Santos at 3%. If no candidate secures more than 50% of valid votes on October 4, the frontrunners will advance to a runoff on October 25.

Lula is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term and has framed his campaign around national sovereignty. He characterized July tariffs imposed by the United States as economic pressure intended to influence the election. Meanwhile, Flavio Bolsonaro, representing the political right, has proposed the institution of a debt ceiling. President Lula is currently in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly.
