Schumer and Schiff Introduce Bill to Probe Trump Oil Funds
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Adam Schiff introduced legislation to investigate the Trump administration's use of offshore accounts for Venezuelan oil proceeds.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Adam Schiff introduced a bill to direct the Government Accountability Office to investigate the Trump administration's management of proceeds from Venezuelan oil sales. The proposed legislation focuses on funds deposited into an offshore account in Qatar, which critics argue creates risks of fraud and corruption. The bill requires the GAO to begin the probe within 30 days and report findings to Congress within 90 days of completion.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the Qatari account as a temporary measure intended to stabilize Venezuela and pledged a retroactive audit. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent testified that the audit process has not yet been established. Representative Sean Casten further questioned whether the administration possesses the legal authority to manage the fund.
Despite the legislative challenge, the administration continues to advocate for the rehabilitation of the Venezuelan oil sector, including allowing U.S. companies to repair existing equipment.
