Justice Department Issues Seven Subpoenas to Nevada Election Office
The United States Department of Justice issued seven subpoenas to Nevada seeking voter information amid a broader federal push to investigate election fraud.
The United States Department of Justice issued seven subpoenas to the Nevada Secretary of State's office over the last three months to obtain voter-related information. The subpoenas were delivered by the Federal Bureau of Investigations as part of a wider effort by the Trump administration to increase federal oversight of election administration.
Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar condemned the action, stating that the federal administration is "inundating election offices with investigations and questions ahead of the election" and making claims of fraud before investigations are complete. Aguilar vowed to remain focused on running a "safe, secure and transparent election this fall."
These legal demands coincide with a Department of Homeland Security surge to investigate voter fraud across nine states. While the Department of Homeland Security publicly claimed an audit found 16,000 noncitizens on Nevada's voter rolls, internal records show the department confirmed only 185 of those cases. Additionally, the administration has requested that the Supreme Court grant the US Postal Service the authority to withhold mail ballots.
