Senate Confirms Henry Wooster as U.S. Ambassador to Kenya

The U.S. Senate confirmed career diplomat Henry Wooster as ambassador to Kenya, where he will prioritize stability ahead of the August 2027 general elections.

The United States Senate confirmed Henry T. Wooster as the next U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kenya via voice vote on September 30, 2026. Nominated by President Donald Trump on June 1, 2026, Wooster is a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service and a former ambassador to Jordan. He fills a vacancy that has existed since Meg Whitman resigned in November 2024, succeeding interim leader Marc Dillard.

During his September 16 confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Wooster stated that the primary U.S. objective regarding Kenya's August 2027 general elections is stability and the prevention of violence. He explicitly noted that the United States is not picking sides between candidates or parties. Wooster described Kenya as one of Washington's most consequential partnerships in Africa, highlighting cooperation in counterterrorism, regional security, health, and technology, and citing Kenya's police deployment to Haiti as evidence of its global commitment.

Wooster, who also served as a U.S. Army officer and Deputy Chief of Mission in Paris, is expected to undergo training in Washington, DC, before arriving in Nairobi in mid-November or early December. During the confirmation process, Senator James Risch identified Kenya as a key sub-Saharan ally, while Senator Jeanne Shaheen warned that shifts in U.S. aid policy had previously disrupted the diplomatic mission.
