Democrats Hold Enthusiasm Advantage Ahead of 2026 Midterms
The Democratic Party holds a significant voter motivation advantage over Republicans as President Donald Trump faces declining approval ratings ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Polling data from CNN, the Washington Post, ABC News, Ipsos, and Marist indicate a significant enthusiasm gap favoring the Democratic Party ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. Republicans are experiencing lower voter motivation than in previous cycles, with only 52% viewing the upcoming elections as more important than previous midterms, a sharp decline from 72% in 2022.
Donald Trump is a central factor in this trend, as his absence from the ballot and falling approval ratings—which have dropped to 37% in some surveys—contribute to the GOP deficit. Economic frustration and rising gas prices have further eroded support. A CNN poll found that only 48% of Republicans intend to vote to support the president, while 76% of Democrats intend to vote in opposition to him.
Additional data from the Marist Poll shows Democrats holding a 10-point lead on the generic congressional ballot. Meanwhile, Marquette University Law School found that only 28% of Republicans are very enthusiastic about voting. Analysts suggest that Republican energy may still increase as Election Day approaches.
