Iran Strikes Oil Tankers and Threatens UAE Digital Infrastructure

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is attacking oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and threatening UAE data centers to disrupt US-assisted energy exports.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck a supertanker in the Strait of Hormuz on October 12, 2026, causing the vessel to catch fire. The IRGC navy stated the ship had disabled its transponders and ignored warnings, an action naval commander Ali Ozmaei previously warned would be viewed as hostile.

These attacks are part of a broader campaign targeting a US-assisted oil shuttle system used by Arab states to export crude oil. The system uses smaller vessels to transfer oil to larger tankers, bypassing an Iranian blockade and a US counter-blockade of Iranian ports. Iran's security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, declared the shuttle system an explicit target, claiming the IRGC has struck several vessels nightly for weeks. Recent operations have expanded to include vessels near the Omani port city of Sohar, with the IRGC reporting that naval mines damaged three tankers over a single weekend.

Beyond maritime strikes, Rezaei threatened US-linked digital infrastructure, including AI facilities and data centers in the United Arab Emirates. The ongoing disruptions have increased global freight costs and forced national oil companies to offer steep discounts on crude oil as tankers avoid the dangerous corridor. The conflict stems from a broader war in West Asia triggered by US and Israeli strikes against Iran in February.
