African Democratic Congress Proposes Food Security Plan for Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of masking rising food insecurity with marginal declines in headline inflation.

The African Democratic Congress accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of lacking effective strategies to combat Nigeria's rising cost of living. The party argued that the government is using a slight decrease in headline inflation—which fell from 15.91% in June to 15.43% in July—to hide a significant surge in food inflation, which climbed from 17.52% to 20.31% during the same period.

Citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics and a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization, the party noted that 35 million Nigerians currently face acute food insecurity. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi stated that the government's celebration of moderated inflation ignores a more troubling reality for citizens.

To address the crisis, the party proposed a five-point plan that treats food security as a national security priority. This strategy includes implementing an integrated national food production plan, lowering production and transportation costs, enhancing security for farmers, and creating a national food reserve system.
