Trump Demands Save America Act to Nationalize Election Rules

During his State of the Union address on February 24, 2026, Donald Trump alleged that Democrats cheat in elections and urged Congress to pass the Save America Act. The proposed legislation would mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration, restrict mail-in ballots, and require states to provide voter data to the Department of Homeland Security.

To accelerate the nationalization of election rules, Trump proposed using executive orders to enforce voter identification reviews, despite previous court rulings blocking similar efforts. Parallel to these legislative goals, the administration launched aggressive enforcement actions. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted raids in Fulton County, Georgia, to seize 2020 election documentation, while the Director of National Intelligence began investigations into voting machines.

Attorney General Pam Bondi further pressured Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to turn over voter rolls in exchange for ending an ICE operation in Minneapolis. These moves faced criticism from the League of Women Voters and David Becker of the Center for Election Innovation & Research. Becker challenged the administration's integrity claims, noting that a review of 50 million records found 99.98% had documented citizenship.
