Trump Links Camp Lejeune Payouts to Midterm Election Results
President Donald Trump warned that veterans exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune may receive no further settlement money if Republicans lose control of Congress.
Donald Trump warned during an October 20 campaign rally in Greenville, North Carolina, that veterans and families exposed to contaminated water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune might receive no further settlement money if Republicans lose control of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections. He pledged to direct the Department of Justice to settle all remaining legitimate claims quickly if Republicans retain control of both chambers.
While Trump claimed his administration delivered $1 billion in settlements, Department of Justice figures from September 18, 2026, show that actual payouts totaled more than $879 million, though settlement offers exceeded $1.1 billion. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 provides compensation for those exposed to industrial solvents between 1953 and 1987.
In a separate development, Attorney General Todd Blanche defended Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. against accusations from commentator Laura Loomer that the department has issued low settlement offers to veterans.
