Global Canada Poll Shows Public Desire for Trade Diversification
Global Canada reports that Canadians want to reduce trade reliance on the United States and increase global engagement despite government budget cuts.
A nationwide consultation conducted by the think-tank Global Canada reveals a strong desire among Canadians to reorient their trading relationship away from the United States. Polling of 7,500 citizens and focus groups with over 400 participants show a broad consensus on increasing defense spending, expanding the military presence in the Arctic, and exporting more oil and gas resources globally.
Participants expressed interest in strengthening ties with the United Nations and the World Health Organization, as well as becoming an associate member of the European Union. Global Canada noted that when citizens receive balanced information, they become more confident in the democratic process and their views do not simply shift in one ideological direction.
These public preferences contrast with the actions of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Since taking office, Carney has reduced Canada's international development budget by nearly $3 billion. This fiscal reduction persists despite Carney's frequent appearances at international forums, such as the World Economic Forum, to discuss global cooperation.
