Ukraine Requests Emergency UN Meeting After Russian Black Sea Ship Attacks
Ukraine requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting following Russian attacks on civilian cargo ships that halted maritime traffic during the peak harvest season.
The Government of Ukraine has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council for July 27 following Russian attacks on at least three civilian cargo ships in the Black Sea. These strikes killed or injured dozens of crew members and caused a total cessation of vessel traffic through the Ukrainian maritime corridor.
Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strikes as a targeted effort to obstruct global food security during the peak harvest season. He characterized the blockade as a form of economic and humanitarian terror designed to hold the global food supply hostage.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by calling for tougher international sanctions and increased pressure on Russia. To mitigate further losses, he urged international partners to provide additional ballistic missile interceptors for the Patriot air defense system to protect civilian lives and infrastructure.
