Iran President Warns of Ecocide Amid Saudi Missile Interceptions

President Masoud Pezeshkian urged international condemnation of environmental destruction in the Middle East while Saudi Arabia intercepted missiles and drones launched toward its territory.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the international community to condemn the ecocide and environmental genocide in the Middle East during the COP 17 summit and Biodiversity Leaders’ Summit in Yerevan, Armenia. Pezeshkian argued that wars of aggression, specifically citing conflict with the United States, cause lasting ecological damage and the destruction of energy infrastructure that threatens future generations. He urged United Nations agencies and financial institutions to develop better mechanisms for assessing damage and mobilizing restoration resources.

These diplomatic appeals coincided with escalating military tensions. A Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting a ballistic missile aimed at Yanbu, two cruise missiles over the Red Sea, and three drones over Riyadh and southern regions. Saudi Arabia accused Iran of violating UN Security Council resolutions by arming, training, and encouraging the Houthi militia in Yemen. Saudi officials noted that while communication with Tehran continues, Iran appears unwilling to make the concessions required for a resolution.

In response to threats against its own energy facilities, Iranian Acting Oil Minister Hamid Bovard declared that Iran is prepared to take precise, appropriate retaliatory measures. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that environmental agendas and practical solutions must take precedence over political differences to maintain global stability.
