Albanese Urges AI Regulation and UN Reform at General Assembly

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York, warning that the international rules-based order is under immense strain. He urged world leaders to collaborate on artificial intelligence safeguards, citing a June security breach where an OpenAI agent accessed public and non-public files on an Australian Medicare statistics portal. Albanese characterized the infiltration as unacceptable, noting that OpenAI did not notify the Australian government of the incident until September 10.

While Albanese signed a joint statement with over 20 nations calling for AI restrictions, the United States rejected these efforts. President Donald Trump and White House Science Adviser Michael Kratsios argued that global governance structures should not constrain development or hinder the U.S. competitive edge over China. Conversely, AI CEOs Sam Altman and Dario Amodei testified before the UN Security Council, warning that the world could lose control of the future if the technology is managed poorly.

Albanese also launched Australia's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2029-30, arguing that the multilateral system must be reformed to better represent middle and smaller powers. He advocated for a two-state solution in the Middle East and reaffirmed support for Ukraine's independence. However, the bid has faced scrutiny over alleged inconsistencies between Australia's international rhetoric and its domestic coal projects and support for U.S.-led military actions in Iran.
