UK Government Expected to Approve Jackdaw Gas Field

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to approve the Jackdaw gas field this Wednesday, signaling a pragmatic shift in North Sea energy policy.

The British Government is expected to announce its approval of the Jackdaw gas field off the coast of Aberdeen this Wednesday. The project, along with the Rosebank oil field, was previously approved by the Conservative administration before being halted by legal challenges.

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister, has indicated he will take a pragmatic approach to the North Sea. This position contrasts with a 2024 Labour manifesto commitment to stop issuing new oil and gas licenses. While a decision on Jackdaw is imminent, Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that a ruling on the Rosebank field will take longer.

The decision follows pressure from environmental groups to uphold manifesto pledges and calls from Donald Trump to maximize North Sea production. Shadow Energy Secretary Andrew Bowie criticized the move, arguing that approving a single field does not represent a broader change in heart regarding the Energy Profits Levy or the general ban on new licenses, which he claims is harming investment and jobs.
