Lula and Bolsonaro Statistically Tied in Brazil Runoff Polls

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Jair Bolsonaro are locked in a statistical tie in simulated runoff matchups ahead of Brazil's presidential election. Recent polling shows a volatile race; an AtlasIntel/Bloomberg poll released Thursday placed Bolsonaro with a narrow lead of 47.2% to Lula's 46.8%. This follows a Quaest survey that put Bolsonaro ahead 42% to 40%, while a BTG Pactual/Nexus poll showed Lula leading 47% to 46%.

In first-round projections for the October 4 vote, Lula consistently maintains a lead over Bolsonaro, though no candidate is projected to secure the 50% required to avoid a runoff. An MDA Research Institute poll showed Lula at 40.5% and Bolsonaro at 30.4%, though this represents a narrowing lead compared to August. Other candidates, including Augusto Cury and Renan Santos, hold single-digit support.

The political tension coincides with an institutional crisis in the Supreme Court of Brazil. The court is scheduled to hold an extraordinary session to decide if an investigation will be authorized into Justice Alexandre de Moraes regarding alleged ties to banker Daniel Vorcaro, which Moraes denies. Meanwhile, Brazilian assets have rallied as investors price in a potential rightward shift in fiscal policy should Bolsonaro win the runoff scheduled for October 25.
