Chinese Hedge Funds Recruit US-Based STEM Students Amid Visa Cuts

Chinese quantitative hedge funds are recruiting science and engineering students in the United States following tighter visa policies and funding cuts from the Trump administration.

Chinese quantitative hedge funds are aggressively recruiting science and engineering students in the United States after the Trump administration implemented university funding cuts and tighter visa policies. The shift follows a May announcement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the U.S. would aggressively revoke some Chinese student visas and increase scrutiny for applicants from China and Hong Kong.

Mingshi Investment Management, a Shanghai-based firm, launched a special program offering full-time positions to students unable to complete their PhDs and internships to those with disrupted study plans. The firm described the move as a social responsibility to provide a recruitment channel for students facing genuine challenges.

Other firms, including Shanghai Goku Technologies, have also expressed openness to hiring qualified students affected by these policies. These funds are leveraging U.S. visa constraints to compete for high-level talent in AI and STEM fields, sectors that were previously dominated by larger global quantitative firms.
