S. Jaishankar Demands UN Reform and Global Action Against Terrorism
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for United Nations structural reforms and a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism during a global summit in New Delhi.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for urgent structural reforms within the United Nations and a stronger global resolve against terrorism during the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan in New Delhi. Speaking on UN Day, Jaishankar asserted that terrorism is a "deadly threat to peace" and rejected its use as an "instrument of statecraft," arguing that the threat persists because some states allow political calculations to override a zero-tolerance approach.
Jaishankar urged the UN to move beyond being a "spectator to global crises" and advocated for reformed multilateralism to include the Global South in decision-making. He cited institutional gridlock regarding conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia as evidence of the need for change, noting that "war anywhere threatens peace everywhere." He emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable solutions to these conflicts.
Beyond security and governance, the minister highlighted a "4F crisis" involving finance, fuel, food, and fertilisers affecting the Global South, while calling for a human-centric approach to artificial intelligence. These remarks followed an official condemnation by the Ministry of External Affairs regarding an October 23 attack on a church in Karak, Jordan, which killed seven people and injured 34.
