Supreme Court Refuses to Overturn Trump Civil Verdict
The Supreme Court of the United States declined to hear Donald Trump's petition to overturn a $5 million verdict for sexual abuse and defamation.
The Supreme Court of the United States declined to hear a petition from Donald Trump to overturn a $5 million civil verdict finding him liable for the sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll. The court provided no explanation for the decision, which follows a previous refusal earlier this year to toss the verdict.
Trump's legal team sought a rehearing based on claims of presidential immunity regarding statements he made while in office. Attorney Roberta Kaplan stated that the jury's unanimous verdict is now final and cannot be challenged in any court.
Carroll has already received the $5 million payment, which her legal team held in an interest-bearing account pending the ruling. This case is distinct from a separate defamation lawsuit in which a jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million, a judgment Trump's lawyers unsuccessfully appealed to a federal appeals court.
