Zelenskyy Awards Elon Musk Order of Freedom
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Elon Musk the Order of Freedom while lobbying for expanded Starlink satellite access over Russian territory.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Elon Musk the Order of Freedom, a high state honor reserved for strategic partners. Zelenskyy cited Musk's "outstanding personal merits in protecting human life and freedom, and in developing relations between the peoples of Ukraine and the United States of America" as the basis for the award.
The honor coincides with efforts by the Ukrainian government to secure expanded Starlink satellite connectivity over Russian territory. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is lobbying Musk to grant this access, which would allow the Ukrainian military to use drones to target Russian missile launchers more precisely. This capability is intended to reduce ballistic attacks on residential areas and infrastructure, especially as Ukraine's supply of U.S.-made Patriot interceptors decreases.
Elon Musk has previously opposed extending Starlink access into Russia, citing risks of escalation. However, Zelenskyy noted that Musk has recently provided more encouraging signals regarding the request.
