Ukraine Exports Naval Drone Tech to Global Markets
Ukraine is negotiating with Gulf states to export maritime drones after using the systems to sink one-third of Russia's Black Sea fleet.
The Government of Ukraine has transformed Black Sea naval warfare by deploying remote-controlled sea drones to counter Russian maritime dominance. These systems, which evolved from modified motorboats into multifunctional platforms, have sunk approximately one-third of Russia's Black Sea fleet. The drones are now capable of launching aerial drones, deploying ground robots for amphibious assaults, and intercepting Russian Shahed drones.
Following the success of these low-cost systems, Ukraine has expanded its production and distribution through international partnerships. The Ukrainian company CFMoto UForce established a joint venture in the United States to produce Magura sea drones, while the Norwegian defense firm Kongsberg opened an office in Ukraine to collaborate on Sargan sea drones. A trade group known as the Unmanned Naval Association currently supports 27 companies experimenting with these naval platforms.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently negotiating with Gulf states to provide naval drones and air defenses to protect coastal cities and oil terminals from short-range attacks. Kyrylo Budanov, the Presidential Chief of Staff of Ukraine, noted that countries in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere have sought to acquire these vessels or establish domestic production since the drones began sinking Russian ships.
