Judge Blocks Trump Administration Taxpayer-Funded Election Ads

U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon ordered the Trump administration to stop airing taxpayer-funded television ads promoting the president ahead of midterm elections.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon ordered the Trump administration on Sunday to immediately stop airing taxpayer-funded television advertisements promoting President Donald Trump. The campaign, which cost nearly $20 million, was funded through U.S. Customs and Border Protection under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025. A coalition including Common Cause, the Democratic National Committee, and the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ alleged the administration unlawfully repurposed congressional funds for political propaganda to influence upcoming midterm elections.

Judge Rochon ruled that the plaintiffs are likely to succeed on the merits and that an injunction serves the public interest. She ordered the government to cancel remaining ad reservations and halt further disbursements for 14 days while she considers a longer-term block. The court rejected the administration's argument that the case was moot, despite claims that the campaign was scheduled to end on Sunday.

Holly Mehringer, Acting CFO of the Department of Homeland Security, informed the court that the agency directed its vendor to cease all media buys after October 11 and requested a final invoice. Common Cause praised the swift court action, asserting there is no legal precedent for using government machinery and funds to influence electoral outcomes.
