Trump-Kim Summit Unlikely to Occur in 2026

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are unlikely to meet in 2026 as Pyongyang ignores U.S. requests for talks.

U.S. and South Korean officials indicate that a summit between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is unlikely to happen in 2026. Despite Trump's expressed eagerness to restart diplomacy and claims in August that Kim had responded to outreach, Pyongyang has not responded to recent requests for a meeting.

Diplomatic obstacles center on North Korea's demands for a shift in U.S. policy regarding sanctions relief and denuclearization. While South Korean intelligence previously estimated a 50% chance of a meeting during the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, on November 18-19, Trump downplayed these prospects on October 19.

White House officials maintain that U.S. policy remains unchanged and that the president remains open to talks without preconditions. U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel noted that any potential meeting would likely be announced with very little notice, though no dates are currently scheduled.
