President-elect De la Espriella Suspends Colombia's Presidential Transition
President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella suspended the formal power transfer to President Gustavo Petro after the incumbent refused to recognize the June 21 election results.
President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella suspended Colombia's formal presidential transition process, known as empalme, on July 7, 2026. The move followed President Gustavo Petro's refusal to recognize the results of the June 21 runoff election, in which de la Espriella defeated Senator Iván Cepeda by approximately one percentage point. While Petro alleged technological interference and fraud, international observers including the Carter Center and the European Union praised the vote-counting process as transparent and reliable.
De la Espriella accused Petro and Cepeda of planning a coup d'état to maintain power and cited hundreds of irregularities within the current administration. In response to the freeze, Finance Minister Germán Ávila suspended the government's handover process, citing aggression from the president-elect's team. De la Espriella has since called on the Colombian armed forces to disobey any orders from Petro that contradict the Constitution and is considering taking his oath of office at a military installation rather than the traditional Plaza de Bolívar for his August 7 inauguration.
Opposition leader Iván Cepeda has demanded that de la Espriella renounce his U.S. citizenship and alleged that he is a collaborator for U.S. intelligence agencies. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the Trump administration's intent to work with the incoming government to advance regional security and economic ties.
