Andy Burnham Orders Radical Options to Nationalize Thames Water
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has instructed officials to develop radical strategies to bring the financially struggling Thames Water under public control.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ordered government officials to develop radical options for addressing the financial crisis at Thames Water, signaling a departure from the cautious approach of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Burnham intends to bring the utility under public control as part of a broader effort to end what he describes as 40 years of neoliberalism.
Proposed strategies include forcing the company into a special administration regime to facilitate nationalization or converting approximately £100 million in outstanding environmental fines into a government equity stake. These measures may trigger expensive legal disputes with creditors, who have already been asked for an additional £2.4 billion to support the company's cash flow.
To support these efforts, Environment Secretary Angela Eagle is drafting a water bill designed to reform bankruptcy laws and remove Thatcher-era caps on government ownership of water companies. These legislative changes aim to simplify the process for future state takeovers of utility providers.
